What is an MVR Check?

A MVR (Motor Vehicle Report or Record) check and is a part of some background screening processes. It is used most often to provide information regarding an applicant’s or current employee’s driving history, displaying information such as DUI convictions, any traffic violations, or even unpaid parking tickets.

These records are kept by the Department of Motor Vehicles in each state. There is no such thing as a national database to search driving records, so MVRs are typically done only for the state where an applicant holds a current license.

What does an MVR Show?

An MVR will check for several pieces of information that show on a driver’s license as well as other violations, crimes, and other driving-related information.

Most MVR’s will contain the following:

License Number
Expiration Date
Full Name
Date of Birth
Restrictions
Height/Weight/Gender
Hair Color/Eye Color
Issue Date
Type of License

Why are MVRs important?

Employers need to know that an employee or candidate that will be driving for them is safe and responsible behind the wheel. Reviewing an applicant’s driving record will provide you an accurate picture of past driving history, i.e. (DWI, License Suspensions & Excessive Speeding)

If you are working in a Department of Transportation (DOT) regulated industry you are required to request a new copy of each driver’s MVR every 12 months.

How Can I Run an MVR Check?

Each state has its own way of managing MVRs, so the amount of information and the manner of obtaining it may be different if you employ people in more than one state.
